Sermon Snippet

Ephesians 6:10-20

March 29, 2020

In times like these we live in our minds – so much going on in there. And from our minds the dis-ease spreads to our hearts. And then the next thing we know we feel physical tension and pain. Oh, how the dis-ease of trials wants to do us harm like a mutated virus.

In times like these we need to right clothes and the right gear and we need to make sure our minds and hearts and loves are protected.

The apostle Paul tells us that we have been given the right clothes and the right gear. He tells us to us in Ephesians chapter 6.

The Whole Armor of God  Ephesians 6:10-20

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. 11Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

13Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. 14Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. 15As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. 16With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18 Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints. 19Pray also for me, so that when I speak, a message may be given to me to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, 20for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it boldly, as I must speak.

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power.

Isolation and seclusion are an introvert’s dream, but if you are extroverted it’s a nightmare.

By definition extroverts get energy from being with others. Introverts get energy by being alone. But no one is one or the other, we all need community and love.  We need to get the strength we need from somewhere. Paul tells us to get it from the Lord. And then he tells us how we get that strength from the Lord.

We need the whole armor of God, covering every inch of our lives.  We don’t struggle against people but the sin that has affected people and robs people of living spiritual lives close to God and one another.

14Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist,

This belt is not like the ones we wear today. This is more like a sash worn around the waste so that when it is time to run you tuck your toga in your belt, so you don’t trip up and fall. So Paul is saying make sure you don’t trip up but straying from God. now is the time to stay close to God.

and put on the breastplate of righteousness.

What does the breastplate protect but your heart. It is so easy to start feeling sorry for ones self. Protect your heart. You belong to God. you are a child of God. you are loves by God. don’t let your heart

Psalm 16 tells us:

7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
   in the night also my heart instructs me.
8 I keep the Lord always before me;
   because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices;
   my body also rests secure.
10 For you do not give me up to Sheol,
   or let your faithful one see the Pit.

11 You show me the path of life.
   In your presence there is fullness of joy;
   in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.

15As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace.

Paul tells us that we are people f the Good News. Above all people we should be the ones that when we speak of this to others on the phone, skype, internet, Facebook, emails, we have so many opportunities to share the love of God. write prayers to your friends.  Help them know God. use this opportunity to share with those who have given up on God that they are loved and that we have a savior.

16With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

So many darts and arrows being thrown – because we want to blame someone for our inconvenience. Take on the shield of Faith – faith in a God that is in charge and in control and loves us. And that with the fruits of the Spirit we can beat this and come out better… love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, these are the fruits of the spirit that we have in abundance.

17Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

This part of the armor is my favorite. And Paul saves the best and most important for last. We need to protect this – not our hair – our minds.  What goes in will come out. put good things in. Paul tells us that we have the Word of God and the Holy Spirit.

If you ever wanted to read the Bible now is a good time to start. Instead guard your mind. Put good things in your mind. Feed it with good things treated like prayer like God’s word like good music like stretching your mind and stretching your intelligence. By going online and learning new things.

Read the Gospel of Mark. Short, sweet, action packed. Before Easter, 2 weeks, get through the 16 chapters. Pray for illumination. Ask God to guide you and fill you.

Paul tells us that prayer matters, and changes things.

6Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

This is my prayer for all of us – that we would use this time to grow in God’s grace.

So, keep posted. I will try to give you daily devotions and prayers each day. To continue to email good stuff for the kids at home, and I am even working on virtual VBS should this go that far. So, watch out on Facebook, emails, and if you need anything be sure to let me know.

Amen!
